The Best Chocolate Cake

So because I will be gone for Father's Day to mark the occasion we had cake and ice cream tonight. This is a picture of the best Chocolate Fudge Cake and it was definitely a cake that required milk. I love and appreciate the fact that I have such a talented wife to constantly keep me fed with some of the best cakes ever on the different special days of the year. Memorial Day Parade

Dacula has a annual Memorial Day Parade every year this is our third year in attendance. These are a couple of the pictures taken, one of Maryn and Kate Harkness and the other of McKay and the Harkness boys. The Harkness family is one of our good friends here in good ol' Georgia. We spend a lot of time shuttling our kids back and forth to each others houses and activities. Dacula is one of the only places in America that does a Memorial Day Parade we are lucky to be able to remember those that have served and protected our freedoms by making the ultimate sacrifice. Also, to all the other Veterans out there. A side note Gretchen ran in the 5k before the parade again preparing for the run across Florida mentioned in the other post.

So Gretchen has been itching to have garden space ever since we settled in Dacula. Well finally after a second year some good soil, dung and a roto tiller what you see in the pictures is the end result. She has beans, carrots, potato's, corn, onions, zucchini, pea's, cucumbers, herbs, lettuce and spinach. Between this backyard space and the small section in the front. We are all excited, we even used some of the lettuce for our dinner tonight.

Gretchen the Runner

So recently, Gretchen's friends have been encourage a new habit, running!!! She and some of her girlfriends are going to run across Florida in a 24 hour relay and so they have been training by doing several of the local 5K runs. Gretchen is building to do a 10K we just need to find one that she wants to run in or works out with our current schedule. But we will, this is a picture from the Susan G. Komen run for the Cure in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness.

McKay and Will

This is the story of two buddies that went to school and played together all year. Here are some pictures of them getting their Play Ball medals. Play Ball is a program they offer to help teach sporting skills and sportsmanship. They had a great time they both worked hard. Will and Mckay have been in the same Pre School and Pre Kindergarten for the past two years they will be attending different elementary schools next year but I am sure will remain close friends as they still will play and attend church together.

Goodbye 5th Grade, Hello Middle School

Here is our daughter Maddie graduating from the 5th Grade. It seems that in the south it is a big deal to move from elementary to middle school. She had her graduation at the local huge Baptist Church, she graduated with 250+ other 5th graders in 12 classes. She was excited it was a special time for her. She also was awarded the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence. Next year she will be attending the newest Middle School in the district they just built it, and it has all the new stuff it will be called Twin Rivers Middle School the mascot is the Bears.

I think I can still count this as fall pictures since they were taken in October. This is McKay at a field trip to an apple farm in North Georgia. The kids each got to pick 5 apples off the tree and bring them home. We went on a hayride and these pumpkins were so neat looking. Sorry the photography isn't better. They were huge pumpkins and so fun to see. I was asking my kids what food they would like for Thanksgiving just to see if they had any favorites. Madalyn said turkey and potatoes and apple pie (she loves Aunt Sherrie's apple pie), Maryn said nice turkey and pumpkin pie and McKay said pumpkin pie, pumpkin butter, pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin dessert, hmmmmm......think McKay likes pumpkin?!

So, Maryn has played soccer for 2 seasons now. She thinks she loves it and is so excited to play until about half way through the season when it turns into "I don't want to go to practice today." Saturday was her last game of the season. Her favorite position is goalie (not sure I spelled that correctly) Maryn has no fear when it comes to pouncing on the ball and begs her coach to play that position. When there's no action on her end of the field, she entertains herself and the parents with little dances and songs which is pretty funny sometimes....especially when she doesn't remember that people are watching.

Red Sox?

So, Erik and I have this friendly fued over baseball teams. He's a Sox guy and I'm a Yankee girl. For the record, I have his hat on ONLY because he didn't want to wear it in the water and NOT because I was supporting the Sox in any way shape or form. He's laughing while he reads this because he knows that I'm only having a little fun with him. However, when he travels to Boston or gets sport attire for the kids with the Red Sox on it....curiously he never brings anything for me. Love you honey!

We went on a dolphin excursion up off the north shore. There isn't a road that goes all the way around the island and the mountains that are behind Erik and McKay are an area of the island that most people don't see because it's not easy to get to. It took alot of persuading the get Madalyn in the water even though she was so excited to see the dolphins but she did it and had fun. The dolphins we saw were spinner dolphins, a little smaller than ones you're probably thinking of when you here dolphin. The came right up by the boat and swam around underneath for a while. We had some good views. It was a great day. The water is the prettiest color blue. I don't know how it gets that blue but it's just really pretty.

We went on a submarine and did the whole underwater experience. I think everyone had a blast except for me. I started getting sick as soon as we boarded the sub and we were on the thing for an HOUR! Let's just say I used the little white bags they give you on the way in and the rest of my afternoon was rough. The kids took these pictures. You can see some sea turtles sitting on the reckage of the top pictures. The pictures don't do it justice, it is pretty if you don't feel sick.

Navatek Cruise

One of the advantages of taking a sitter was being able to go on a few dates with my hubby! Erik took my on this fabulous dinner cruise with a 7 course meal, music and entertainment. It went all along the west coast and down past Diamond Head and then watched the sunset before returning to dock. I ate my first lobster from the shell and just relaxed on the ship. A very fun memory!

It took a few tries to figure out how far from shore you have to put the sand castle for it not to get washed away and can I just say how glad I was that we were in a hotel and not at home because we had enough sand in the tub every night to make our own island.

Believe it or not at one of the islands we had torrential rains and got completely drenced and then it was sunny again. Poi is a purple paste made from mashed up tarrow root. It's pretty much like eating wallpaper paste. Very bland and doesn't taste like much. They had samples and the kids chose to partake. Knowing what it tasted like I chose not to partake and McKay's expression is pretty classic of most peoples response.

HULA lessons. Before there was written language on the islands, hula was how stories were told. Each area of polynesia has a different style and meaning behind their dances. It was so fun to see all their costumes, the colors and the different dances.

The kids playing some games at one of the villages at the PCC. I think it's New Zealand/Maori. McKay is doing the poi balls. The dancers swing them around while they dance and it's pretty cool.

Believe it or not, this guy was the same guy that did this demonstration when I was there in 1994. He is HILARIOUS! It's about the coconut and all the different uses it had/has for the islanders.

The temple in Hawaii. We walked through the visitors center with the kids and they weren't too interested in looking at more flowers but the grounds there really are pretty. It's right next to the Polynesian Cultural Center which is where we went next.

Waimea Falls

We went to Waimaea Falls up on the North Shore of Oahu. Everything down by the hotel is so commerical and I wanted to kids to see some of what real Hawaii was. It's kind of like a botanical garden with lots of native flowers and plants and a few ruins from Hawaian Royalty who visited the valley and believed it had healing powers. There is a waterfall up in the canyon but the island was in a drought and there wasn't a single drop of water in the canyon. Seems strange that you can be completely surrounded by water and not have any on the island, huh. Sometimes when it rains there are just waterfalls everywhere and it's so pretty but we didn't see that this time. Anyway, the kids did a little craft and made a fish on a fishing line out of coconut leaves. I love, love, love the one of McKay's little hands making that fish. So cute!

Airplane

The REALLY long airplane ride to Hawaii. We didn't have seats together but did you know they have TV on demand on airplanes. I had no idea. The girls watched Hannah Montana and the Suite Life of Zack and Cody which are favorites at our house. It was nice. The kids did do good on the plane.

OK Ya'll......I get the hints about Hawaii. I have this huge bag of stuff and I never seem to be able to just sit down and do it, but here is a start. These are pictures from the hotel we stayed at, Hilton Hawaiian Village. It was beautiful with private beach access and several swimming pools. We combined our stay with one of those grand vacation time share things where we sat in on a sales presentation for 2 hours and got a week in Hawaii REALLY CHEAP. We took one of the young women from the ward with us, Caitlyn. She is in several pictures with the kids and I have to apoligize for my amatuer photography. Learning how to take better pictures is on one of my to do lists. One of the pictures with the kids was a penguin and turtle feeding at the hotel. They had a ton of stuff for the kids to do which was really nice, although all the kids really wanted to do was swim, swim, swim. I think my kids are part fish!

I wasn't planning on dressing up this year but Madalyn was feeling too grown up this year to do the whole halloween thing so I had to give her a challenge. I have some good ideas for next year. Maryn was Laura Ingalls and is wearing that poineer costume I wore when I was about 10 and we did "West in the Spring" while we were in Pittsburgh. Mads decided to be a rock star and McKay picked out a Darth Vader costume but wouldn't wear it. He's stuck on this spiderman costume that is way too small. He's not too thrilled about being dressed up but we got a picture.

Haunted House

This is the only kind of haunted house you will ever find me at. We made this little haunted house, from a kit but the way. Madalyn did the roof and the ghost, Maryn did the sidewalk and some of the candies and McKay put on most of the candy corns, or the ones he didn't eat first. We had mice picking at this house all month long. I never could figure out where they were coming from but each day more candies were gone. It made me excited for gingerbread houses and I think we might try a gingerbread tee-pee for Thanksgiving.

FHE treats

Having caramel apple dip for FHE treats. I warmed up some caramels in a mini-crock pot and added some choc chips and a little cream. I was thinking it would be less messy than real caramel apples but taste the same. I was right about the taste but wrong about the mess. The kids had a lot of fun though and I guess that's what counts.

So, many of you will not be surprised that the only pictures of swim team that I got this year were at the very last meet. Be that as it may....I got pictures! Madalyn did a fabulous job with swim this summer. It was the first time she had ever been on a team and she hasn't ever had formal swimming lessons. She worked hard and earned the "most improved swimmer" award in her age group which consisted of about 20 girls. She had the option of starting basketball this fall with some friends from church or doing swim team for the winter and she chose to swim. For winter team she has to try out with SwimAtlanta and we do that on Tuesday so we will keep you posted. The girl next to Mads is her good friend Victoria Botz. Her family moved to GA the same time we did and our families have become good friends. Peeking behind is pesky little sister Maryn, who missed out on swim team this year because of a broken left arm. She landed on her wrists while jumping out of a swing and broke her radius all the way through just below the wrist. She wore a cast for 6 weeks and is supposed to be in a brace for 12 more weeks. Luckily about 3 weeks into it all we as able to get a cast just below her elbow and it was waterproof. It made our summer much more bearable. She had an awesome cast that was 3 different colors...very cool...but she wouldn't let me take a picture of it. I should of sneeked one in the night but I think Em has a glimpse of it on one of her pictures.

So, just in case you hadn't noticed...the girls had thier hair CHOPPED. A mom's got to pick her battles and this is one it was okay to loose because hair will grow back. Madalyn has been bugging me for about a year to cut her hair and so I gave in and then OF COURSE Maryn had to follow suit. They both got stacked bobs and they do look cute. Maryn did Locks of Love and donated 10 1/2 inches of her hair for wigs. It takes something like 3000 hairs to make one wig. Mads didn't quite have enough for LOL but wanted to cut her hair anyway. Both the girls have decided that having short hair isn't as fun as they thought and are trying to grow it out again.

Erik and McKay at the Braves game. Erik, having been raised by goodly parents in WASHINGTON, has been a Seattle Mariners fan all his life. When we moved to the southeast he graciously accepted a team on the other side of the Mississippi to cheer for. It was not the Braves. However, he bought (and wore) a Braves jersery with the rest of us and we all had a great time.

Those of you who know Uncle Charles know that he love, love, loves the Atlanta Braves. While the Grants were visiting us in Georgia we were able to attend a game on the 4th of July. Those of you who know our Maryn Elizabeth also know that she has no fear or anyone or anything and loves to sing and dance....SO...when an invitation to dance with the girls at the stadium presented itself Maryn DANCED! I was unable to see the actual event because when we got to the stadium Madalyn got heat stroke and needed to go to the first aid station for a bit and I was with her. Not to worry though, by about the 4th inning Mads was cooled off, rehydrated and ready for fun!

OK ya'll! I'm starting back at the beginning of the pictures on my camera....so bare with me. We're all on Hawaii time still and last night Madalyn was up until 2:00 A.M.!!!! So, I'm hoping to make some progress on the blog. One of the families in our ward owns this fresh water pond in the middle of suburban Atlanta. McKay asks me all the time when we can go fishing and finally I gave in and took him to this little place. We got lucky and one of the regulars there took pity on me and gave the kids "fishing lessons." We played catch and release for about an hour and the kids had a blast.

My Stripling Warriors

So, McKay has this knight costume that he loves. I had gotten it for an Armor of God fireside because I needed a sword, but it has turned out to be one of his favorites. He was playing dress up when Erik was taking birthday pictures and had to have his picture taken with his sword and helmet. Erik metioned afterward that he foresaw a stripling warrior blog in the future. He was right, as always! All of us mom's know there is something special about our little guys. Maryn gave us a Family Home Evening lesson tonight about the Stripling Warriors and bore her testiomony that she knew that Heavenly Father helped them to fight their battles. Later that evening she asked me if I wondered how she knew that about the Stripling Warriors. When I asked her how she knew she said, "because it says in the scriptures." So matter of fact. I'm glad somewhere in the confusion and chaos of life she is learning and remembering that the Lord helps those who trust in him.

Orff Honors Concert

About 6 weeks ago Madalyn was chosen to represent her elementary school along with 10 other 4th graders and participate in the Atlanta Area 5th Annual Orff-Schulwerk Concert. She has been rehearsing before school several days a week and the concert was on Saturday, May 3rd. 15 schools in the metro-Atlanta came together, meeting only on that day and prepared nine ensembles which included percussion instruments, voice, movement to music and playing the recorder. Madalyn said by the end of the day she was all sung out but she had fun and we really enjoyed watching the fruit of her labors.

So, I've been inspired by my sisters to make my blog "cute." Last night the kids and I sat down and went through all the cousins' blogs and decided we needed to make ours better. We looked through all the cute blog templates and Madalyn's vote won this time with the yellow flowers. Erik put up a songlist with a few of our family favorites and fixed the layout. We celebrated Erik's birthday on Friday because he had to be out of town for the actual day. Erik asks for the same cake every year since he first had it...that Chocolate Prailine Cake. McKay asked if daddy was 4. Erik laughed and said 4 away from 40! Are we really that old already. I say we because my day to be 4 away from 40 is just around the corner.

The kids were exhausted every day. Erik couldn't resist taking a picture of our sweet babies when they were asleep. I just love that they can't talk back. The girls had so much fun sharing a room at the beach that they've decided they want to share a room at home. They have been getting along great. Erik and I are on pins and needles wondering how long it's going to last. I hope forever. I told them how Aunt Kate and Aunt Emily shared a room thier whole life until they got married. Madalyns eyes got huge and her jaw dropped..."thier whole life?!....WOW!"

At the pools, the girls made friends with some girls from Kentucky. It's like they were kindred spirits or something. We've never met another sister combo that had so much in common with Madalyn and Maryn. They had a blast in their pretend animal worlds and running back and forth between the hot tub and the pool. This is a picture of them on thier last day together. Erik and I had fun visiting with thier parents, who were also amazed that there was another pair of sisters/daughters just like thiers. It was alot of fun! HELLO to the Patels if they read this!

Here are the kids searching for sea shells or whatever the waves send in. The water was really rough while we were there and the kids had more fun in the pool that in the water at the beach. We found lots of fun shells. Madalyn was most interested in finding the "cool" ones and is very proud of her collection.

Spring Break 2008

We went to the Alabama Gulf Shores for Spring Break this year. Actually, I think it's the first time my kids have been to a real beach and the first time we've taken a family vacation during spring break. In the south, it is THE thing to head to the beach while the kids are out of school, so we went and had a great time. It was fabulous to escape for a few days and relax.

Easter Sunday all dressed up. I know I'm their mama but I have to say they are a good looking trio. Maryn really wanted a white dress this year so I got one that will fit her in January when she gets baptized but it goes all the way to the floor. She's been in heaven having a long dress she can wear in public. She reminded me that Cinderella has to lift her dress when she walks, so Maryn has been lifting her skirt most of the day. Madalyn didn't like the stitching on Maryn's dress because it was too "baby" So we found her a grown up girl dress that she was happy to wear. McKay really dislikes getting ready for church but we came to a compromise and he wore his easter outfit to church today. The girls felt like princesses today and even went so far as to let McKay know that he was thier doorman and needed to open and close all the doors behind them.....including helping them in and out of the car. McKay, being the sweet little brother that he is, happily fullfilled thier request. It was pretty cute!

McKay has been learning to golf from Daddy. He thinks it's fabulous fun. Erik has him trained to hold the club and get in front of the ball by saying "stance." He knows just what to do. Mommy made him some pretend holes out of upside down paper plates so he wouldn't have to always be outside.

Our Maryn Elizabeth recently celebrated her 7th birthday. She got her very own, not handed down from her sister, bike and rode it all by herself the very same day. She love, love, loves riding her bike and asks every day afterschool if she can go for a bikeride. Each time she chooses a different "friend" to ride in the basket. Madalyn fractured her growth plate again. She ran into a classmate at school and heard it crack 3 times and then it hurt really bad. Her teacher at school didn't think much about it and I didn't either when she came home becuase she complains about it hurting quite a bit. Later that evening I noticed that she'd been sitting on the couch all afternoon reading instead of the usual bike-ride or trampoline so I went to look at her ankle. It was really swollen and purple all around and underneath her ankle. Talk about a bad mommy moment. We got her iced and comfortable and saw several doctors the next day. After being referred to a pediactric orthpeadic she was casted and told to take it easy for the next 6 weeks. She's having a rough time getting used to her cast but she's been a real tropper about getting where she needs to go. Her elementary school is 3 floors and she has to climb 4 flights of stairs to get to several of her specials, (music, drama, etc) She chooses to climb stairs instead of ride the elevator most days.
